Groot Constantia

Groot Constantia is the oldest wine farm in South Africa which is still in operation. Grapes were grown at the Cape as far back as 1658 by Jan van Riebeeck where he made the first wine at the Cape a year later. Poor wine was made at the Cape and was consumed locally until the arrival of Simon van der Stel in 1679. With his innovative methods, the wine became an exportable commodity. Because of his position, he was granted a large portion of land where Constantia is today. Here, whe could grow vines and also keep an eye on False Bay for enemy approaching from that area. With the restoration of Groot Constantia by Hendrik Cloete in 1792, Groot Constantia is now the finest example of a Neoclassical settlers wine farm in the world.
